Ultimately, the best characters will always be the ones that inspire and relate to you regardless of what gender you are. You know, the ones who are up to more interesting stuff than whatever bathroom or section in the clothing store they hang out in.

(Edit): before anything else, I want to make this clear. This entire concept does not apply to women alone, every demographic & personality under the sun can fit into this; "only there as a token" trope. This isn't a strictly a problem for female characters. There's a lot of stuff to unpack here, none of what I'm about to say here is an attack on Elsie as a person, even though it may sound like that at times, it's just the way I talk when annoyed at something. I'm sure she's an absolutely delightful person irl & I hope to see more of her in future (less antagonistically driven) videos. I'm mainly trying to dismantle the poorly formulated arguments shown here that I've seen incorrectly flaunted around time & time again. I don't want to believe or even assume Elsie is a much more forward & less considerate of other perspectives types of personalities just from the way she talks, so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt & just go with it being the way she *presents* her argument. I believe people fail to realize that sometimes when characters are made to fit a role (gender or otherwise) it's entirely possible that they *don't need to be more than that.* I'm black & I've seen DOOOOZENS of the "big black guy" or even "male brutes" in general in superhero teams &/or tv-show teams in general, I've never been personally offended by any of it. You know why? Because not only was 60% of the time the male brute character had interesting personality &/or story arcs, but there are times when that character *only* exists to fit that character slot. And you know what? That's not a bad thing. Yes, I'm sure many cases of the Smurfette Princible were just to have a love interest for a the males, it's tiresome at best with how many times they repeated that trope throughout the 90s, but you fail to realize that in story telling, not all characters need to be worthy of the front-page. Do you emotionally & spiritually identify with every human on the planet with xx chromosomes? Just because she's female, that means your perspective on the world hangs on the balance of her existence? You don't need to be the subconscious savor of every fictional woman *just* because you're also a woman. Just like I don't need to go on a one-sided rant whenever I (a black man) see the "big black brute" on a tv show. Else, if I had a major problem with every superhero series that featured a single "black brute" on one or more of the teams, I would never be able to stomach reading a single issue/episode ever again. I may come off as a bit aggressive in this comment, but this whole video seems disingenuous & misleading. I don't care for the "Smurfette Princible" very much either, but you've got to draw a line in the sand eventually. Half the shows & movies you listed near the beginning, the Smurfette equivalenT in those films were *MADE* to fit that role. That's how fiction works, *ROLES.* Cool 1-dimensional Anime-style Protagonist Hot-headed Rogue Quick-Whitten Jokester Big Brute The Science Nut *These. Are. Called. ROLES.* And roles; are meant to be filled. Talk about the *individual* lack of personality or nuance in a specific character all the live long day, but I cannot for the life of me get with this self-serving projection vomit that some people like to call real criticism. I am not defending any particular principle or trope, but the fact that you're acting as if this thing only happens to women is laughable at best. 14:05 Did that ruin the show for you? Did that invalidate the existence of the female characters in your eyes? No? Then what's the problem? 14:21 I don't believe these 2 are strong *because* they're female, they're just strong & *happen* to be female. Is that a problem for you? 14:32 Here we are, this is a predictable sentiment from a lot of misguided writers. These are not well-written *female* characters, these are well-written *characters,* who *are* female. With the exception of a few details in their backstories & how they interact with the narrative in some areas. If you completely removed s** from the equation, what would that change? "A soldier takes off the metal helmet & kills the witch king" ...nothing? Nothing has changed? In this *one* scene, what is the relevance of the soldier being a woman *or* a man. Unless the character is *extremely* important, nobody should care more about her, a woman, killing the king over Gimli, a dwarf, killing him. When you discard any character's personality, ambition, backstory &/or substance & whittle her down to; *"ah great, another female, it's a good thing we've got one of *those* on stage" that kind of sounds more s**ist than the Smurfette Principal, doesn't it? Tell me what you believe is more s**is; creating a character for the purpose of fitting a female-driven position or taking an already established character, ignoring anything & everything to her story besides her gender, and labeling her as nothing more than; "a good representation of that gender"? I can tell you my answer; it isn't the former.

Bechdel is pronounced "Beck-dell." Also, the Bechdel Test is complete and utter garbage. There are a shit-ton of movies that treat women pretty grossly, that absolutely pass the Bechdel Test. And plenty of movies feminists/feminism in general are absolutely in love with, that FAIL the test.

  28. DaZebraffe

    4 napja

Also, since the whole idea behind the Smurfette Principle is that the sole female character is "just there to be pretty/sell the franchise to girls/become motivation for the male characters to take action when she gets kidnapped/etc.," you can't actually count Star Wars. Leia was a badass. Same for Gargoyles, 'cause Lisa Maza was no damsel in distress.

Also, 4:43 seems to be implying Mercy is the only female character in Overwatch...which makes it painfully obvious you've never played Overwatch, and didn't do your homework on it properly. I don't even play the game, and one quick search for "Overwatch character list" and a scan of the wiki's list, shows me there are fifteen male characters, fifteen female characters, and two that are robots, so technically neither male nor female. Good job.

There are good points here but you've got some things skewed... there are other female Smurfs in the cartoon. Sassette and Nanny. Why does nobody remember Irma from TMNT? She was awesome and she and April were fun together. GI Joe has multiple female characters-- and many of them got toys-- Jinx, Baroness, Scarlett, Lady Jaye, Covergirl and Zarana. You forget the song by the first tooth ponies murdering the new born twins because they're jealous-- and the killer eldritch slime, or any of the other really disturbing crap that happened on g1 mlp-- very rarely was it tea-parties, ever. More often it was firebreathing salamanders and cursed horseshoes. Gargoyles is a poor example of the Smurfette principle-- it has four female regular characters in addition to many female setting characters. Thundercats also has multiple reoccurring female characters including Mandora, a female Robocop-like law woman, and three female Thundercats. He-Man is dripping in not only female characters but powerful ones-- Marlena the badass pilot and explorer and Queen, Teela as Captain of the Guard, the Sorceress, Dre-Elle, Evil-Lyn as a main villain who often had her own plots independent of Skeletor... not to mention all the minor female characters and the fact She-Ra is also an expansion of the Masters universe. I just feel like you read someone else's summary of things and went from that rather than your own opinions or your examples would have been better chosen.

I'm a little confused exactly what the Smurfette Principle is. Is it quantity of female characters with all boys and one girl? If it's that, I don't think G.I. Joe should be on the list with Scarlett, Lady Jaye, Jinx, Baroness. Is it quality of females characters with their defining trait being "girl"? If it's that, I don't think Gargoyles should be on the list with how Elisa was portrayed.

I think the real point of the "Bechdel Test" is to become aware of how rarely it's fulfilled in media in general, not to judge any particular show or movie specifically. As you pointed out, a show can have excellent female characters and "fail" the test, or it can have crappy, shallow female characters and "pass." What's more useful is to take note that such a trivial, simple thing regarding female representation in media is remarkably difficult to find -- whereas the equivalent with male characters is comically easy to find. Also, if the inclusion of Smurfette was to allay fears that the smurfs were gay, then by that logic doesn't that imply that all the smurfs are fucking her? Is that what they wanted viewers to think?

the Bechdel test has always bugged the shit out of me, cause a show can fail it for a small off hand comment, like "oh shit, my dads gonna kill me for that" but pass it by simply flipping the parental role, or if the main characters is a guy, the show will most likely fail the test because the whole show revolves around them, i mean the whole thing stems from a comic in 1985, on how a character will only watch things that match her 3 rules, and in turn fails the test by mentioning the third rule... also a pretty crap way to select what movies to watch, kinda like the wierdos that wont play a game if it has a female protagonist

*Legit Question* Is this a defiance of the Smurfette Principle: Fujiko from Lupin III. She is the only reoccurring female character in an otherwise cast of male characters. She has had romantic dealings with the main character in the past, which are rarely shown. However, her main role is to almost invariably act as a secondary antagonist, ruining the main character's schemes time after time for her own benefit. Is this an example or a subversion of the Smurfette Principle?

I do not think this principle is neccessarily a problem if a show is aiming for boys as audience and girls can choose to watch it or not, i am not a fan of complaining for the sake of complaining. This is especially true if it is literally just about "leading roles", the Turtles had leading roles of Turtles who were massive, have not seen or been one myself in real life and i am not gonna complain about that. In generell, some shows did not have many personalities that stood long term, odds were those had few of everything to begin with, others had huge casts and could have done this differently. But the oddest thing about this is that the Turtles had Irma and April. And later on there were Sassette and Grandma with the smurfs, so there was more representation after all. It would be just as if not more valid to complain that this species that did not seem to have any females later on be canonically rewritten to have had them in the past and all. In terms of the smurfs there is something else that is odd, Smurfette was named after her gender but it was kind of "her name" more so then any of the early guys who were mostly named after job/trait, then there were a few named by family position and later children hat actual names. That stands out as more odd to me. Someone in the comments said that "My little Pony is basically the same for women", yet never once did i complain about the show as a child and would watch it whenever i could. edit: Lol, the video just literally dropped from 4 digit downvotes to 2 digits. But i myself took back my downvote after it became a much more nuanced point of view. The nuance helped also with the "joke" of "violence against the guy" which is itself an old trope just that it is generally accepted

This isn't that uncommon, and it goes both ways. Shows that were generally aimed at boys, tend to have all male cast with 1 female supporting character... BUT what people forget is... it goes the other way too... Shows aimed at a female audience, often had only a single male character and he was often just comic relief. My little ponies... for example tended to only have 1 or 2 male characters (spike the dragon) and the rest of the cast was female. She-Ra... rainbow bright, etc. now, the reason for this is far far more annoying then most people think. The reason for cartoons, the whole point to cartoons in the 80's... was to sell toys. Period. If a cartoon couldn't sell toys, it didn't make money, and as such wasn't worth the time it took to animate. Shows lived and died by their toy sales. And the problem quickly cropped up, boys, and girls... played with different types of toys. Parents would fork out big bucks for transformers, and the transformers cartoon was constant marketing, introducing new products (characters) all the time. The problem was, girls toys, tended to be more limited, cartoon wise. there wasn't a lot in the 80's they could do for animated girls toys. Girls toys were very wide spread, with different brands and types. so girls had a wider verity, but their toys didn't lend themselves all to often to animated series. In this we had care bears, my little ponies, rainbow bright, etc.. but then add in things like skipping ropes, skip it, home theamed things like easy bake, and such... which really didn't lean towards cartoons.

I never noticed. I watched a lot of Scooby Doo. Not enough appreciation for how progressive a show it was.

This reminds me of Elizabeth Harmon from the Queen's Gambit, because she got upset that she was famous for being a woman. It is logical that people were sexist in the time it takes place, but that doesn't make it right.

I’m in middle school and friend groups are usually are either a group of girls with one guy or a group of guys with one girl so maybe that’s part of why that principle is successful because it’s normal in a school environment this isn’t based on anything I’m just saying what I’ve observed and they are rising if it might affect this principal

You showed Steven Universe as an example? Well actually I believe while The Crystal Gems are there, they could have been the whole protagonist characters, but I believed I heard that Cartoon Network was sexist towards Rebecca Sugar and forced her to add a male character. So Steven may have not been a thing.

@Seungji Lee Checking back I see that my comment have become victim of youtubes insidious censorship policy, which is another strong point in my favour as only the truth needs to be suppressed, and only by these who are nefarious. Regardless I need to speak much in euphemism this time to avoid triggering whatever it was so forgive me for being vague. Feminism is evil, because it is nothing but hatred for men, but also for also for women, as it is opposed to femininity. Women who follow this toxic ideology ends up bitter, alone and childless. But the effect is only clear after it is too late for the women to redeem themselves. It advocate promiscuity, which is one of the most irresponsible thing for (especially women) to be, ruining them for any good men, and thus confirming their bias that there is no good men (because no good men wants anything to do with a women such as that). It thus destroys the life of everyone it touches but hurts women the most, which is why women needs to speak out against it.

Fun fact: The Smurfs themselves were pure communist propaganda. Its creator Peyo was an anarchy communist, a very common ideology in mid century Belgian among the intellectuals, and the smurfs are his utopia. The antagonist Gargamel who represent capitalism literally wanted to eat the smurfs and /or turn them into gold.
